I Know Enough About Tomorrow To Make It Through Today

Quotes

A lot of you think God’s left you and he hasn’t. He’s told you what’s gonna happen in these last days. -Pastor Jim Bakker

Narrative

Pastor Jim Bakker continued his 2012 warning message and the top five words God gave him for the coming year. In previous shows, he covered the words Confusion and Explosions and, in this program, moved on to word three: Deception. He noted that millions are being deceived in their home churches and have come to love worldly things. Pastor Jim admitted how his past “prosperity teaching” had led many astray and placed a heavy emphasis on material things, rather than on serving others. He explained that in his book “Prosperity and the Coming Apocalypse,” he took each verse he used in past decades in teaching the gospel of prosperity, and placed them in proper context. He then encouraged the “sheep” to do their own study and reading to avoid being led astray.

The Bible states that many false prophets will come in the Last Days preaching another gospel (2 Cor. 11:4), and Pastor Jim noted that messages related to the love of money or prosperity fall into this false gospel category. He recalled a quote from fellow pastor, Chuck Swindoll, who labeled false preaching as “longhorn sermons,” or those which make “a point here, and a point there, and [have] a lot of bull in between.”

Pastor Jim spent much time in 2 Timothy 4 going over verses 1-8, which detail how a time will come when Christians will no longer desire sound doctrine but will seek out teachers who will tickle their ears with fables and myths because they no longer want to hear the truth. This reminded him of the late 1990s when he traveled, with his wife, Lori, to preach at churches across the country. He was often told not to preach from the book of Revelations because pastors did not want him to frighten the flock. “I think we need a little more rebuking from the pulpit,” Pastor Jim observed. He went on to compare some churches to spoiled children who do not know how to behave because they never received discipline or rebuke. Even God, according to His word, chastens those whom he loves, Pastor Jim said, adding that lack of boundaries in America is one thing that has made it the top prison state in the world. “When we don’t have discipline, we have rebellion,” which the Bible says is equivalent to the sin of witchcraft, (1 Sam. 15:23).

He encouraged Christians to begin to follow the word by praying for and bearing one another’s burdens; by putting elders to the use outlined in scripture, and, rather than seek out faith healers, pray for each others’ healing, as the New Testament says. He shared he can no longer teach a prosperity gospel which only contributes to the atmosphere of deception that envelops the church, but instead has learned to put Jesus first in all things. He believes this type of repentance and turning back to God’s way will cause a great revival and harvesting of souls at the end of the age.
