A truck bombing in the Iraqi city of Diwaniya has killed at least 25 people and wounded 40 more on a day where bomb attacks spread throughout the country.
The bombing appeared to be aimed at Shia Muslims who were gathering at a market near a mosque for a pilgrimage to Karbala. The Shia community is celebrating the anniversary of the birth of a revered Imam.
Police have shut down all entrances to the city in an attempt to quell more violence.
A second blast in Karbala killed four and injured more than 30. Those blasts were also believed to be targeting Shia pilgrims.
Three were killed in a blast near a military base north of Baghdad.
Officials have blamed the attacks on Sunni insurgents connected to al-Qaeda.
