Defense Minister Ehud Barak had given Egypt permission to temporarily introduce the helicopters after terrorists killed 16 Egyptian soldiers in the Sinai and then entered Israeli territory driving stolen military vehicles on Sunday night, before being thwarted by the Israel Defense Forces. Ministers were asked to approve the measure over the phone because of the request’s importance. Egypt’s helicopter gunships had already been deployed.

This was the first time that Egypt’s attack helicopters have been used in the Sinai since 1973 and it was reported that the gunships killed 20 terrorists near Tumah.
