As bombs and rockets explode over Damascus, fears and concerns increase over potential dangers of the five manufacturing plants of Chemical weapons as well as 20 different storage sites for chemical and biological weapons.
Intelligence agencies believe that Syria has one of the largest biological weapons stockpiles in the world. After the United States revealed that Assad’s regime had begun moving the chemical weapons stockpiles, worries have increased over the fate of such dangerous weapons in such a hostile environment.
There is the ever-present danger that President Bashar al-Assad could use these weapons on his own citizens to squelch the uprising and secure his position as head of state. At this point that desperate thought is not inconceivable, but very risky. There is also the danger of these weapons falling into the hands of terrorist groups such as Hezbollah or even end up with the growing number of foreign fighters linked to al-Qaeda, now operating against the Assad regime on Syrian soil.
There is also a growing possibility that the stockpiles of weapons could be accidentally set off and released into the atmosphere because of out-of-control fires or indiscriminate bombing.
There are few options open for action by western governments. There is no doubt the U.S. and Israel have contingency plans to enter Syria and secure the chemical weapons, possibly with Jordanian troops playing an active role. There is also hope that a solution might come from a transitional government to stop the terrorist organizations from dividing the spoils on a first come, first serve basis. That is as long as the fallen nation is not taken over by Muslim/Islamic terror groups.
