Egyptian Parliament Declared Invalid; Military Takes Control

II Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court has ruled the law dictating rules for the parliamentary elections is invalid, meaning that parliament must be dissolved and a new law put in place.

As a result of the decision, the Supreme Council of Armed Forces announced they have full legislative power and will announce a 100-person assembly. The assembly will write the new constitution for the nation. SCAF has been in control of Egypt since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.

The parliament had been controlled by Islamists lead by the Muslim Brotherhood. The military had been expressing concerns about the Islamists since they gained control of the new parliament.

Muslim Brotherhood leadership denounced the ruling.

“[The ruling goes] against any true democracy they spoke of,” leadership said in a statement.

The Court also ruled a law passed by the Islamist dominated parliament that would ban anyone connected to the Mubarak administration is also invalid. This allows Ahmed Shafik, the last prime minister to serve under Mubarak, to remain in the Presidential runoff election this weekend. The opposition candidate is Islamist Mohamed Morsi.

Egypt’s Justice Ministry issued a decree giving military leaders the right to arrest civilians.
