Somalia Facing “Hunger Emergency”

Luke 21:11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

“We have grown all too accustomed to the poignant pictures of shriveled men, women, and even children whose bodies have been affected by famine in Third World countries.”

-Jim Bakker in “Prosperity and the Coming Apocalypse”

Save The Children has issued a statement saying that drought and continuing conflicts in Somalia threatens the recovery from famine in the country.

The charity group says an “urgent increase” of aid is needed to the region because most families in Somalia are still unable to deal with the effects of the ongoing drought. East Africa had the worst drought in 60 years in 2011 and the drought conditions continue. Attacks by Islamic terrorist groups are also weakening the food supply.

The al-Queda group al-Shabab posted video on their website showing the group burning sacks of food that they claimed to have stolen from the International Committee of the Red Cross.

“We’re going to have a very late harvest,” Anne Mitaru of Save the Children told the BBC. She added the situation is magnified by the conflicts that keep food prices high.

“Families are unable to recover,” she said.

The World Bank says that outright famine is not anticipated but that the situation is serious enough to merit attention.
