בוקו חראם, the Nigerian Islamic extremist group responsible for murdering Christians through the African nation, has had their leadership designated terrorists by the US State Department.

The move means that any assets connected to the group’s leaders in the United States will be frozen and that contact with US citizens will be banned. The move is not expected to have much of an effect on the individual men but is seen as an attempt by the United States to help quell violence in the nation.

The group last attacked a series of Christian churches last Sunday. The group has also been engaged in gun battles with Nigerian government security forces.
