The European Union’s law enforcement agency, Europol, arrested 11 people yesterday in what’s being called a “ransomware” plot.

Lead by Spanish investigators, the officers arrested men in Russia, Georgia and Ukraine who attempted to force people to pay money to continue using their computer or to not be turned into authorities on false charges including having child pornography on their machines. (יותר…)

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta stated he is “very concerned” about the chance of a major cyber attack on the United States that could bring down government and financial systems. The declaration came as part of his testimony to a congressional panel regarding the upcoming Defense Department budget.

Panetta compared the danger of the cyber-attack on America to that of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. (יותר…)

A newly revealed Al Qaeda video calls on followers to launch cyberattacks on Western targets, a message called “alarming” by U.S. lawmakers in light of the increase in such attacks last year.

The US House of Representatives has passed a bill that would allow the government to access your private data on the “suspicion” of a “cyber threat.”

The bill passed the house on Thursday 248-168. While the bill, the “Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA)” passed the house by a wide margin the US Senate is expected to take up an entirely different internet security bill. President Obama has threatened to veto CISPA. (יותר…)

Iran is gearing up for cyber-attacks against U.S. infrastructure and recruiting hackers. The Iranians have used Hezbollah militants out of Lebanon previously and now it would appear they are putting together a cyber-militia of skilled hackers from this same terrorist base. This new ploy would make it difficult to prove that Iran was behind the attacks.

According to a report in an extremist’s Iran newspaper, the Revolutionary Guard warned the United States to “worry about an unknown player somewhere in the world attacking critical infrastructure.” (יותר…)
