Two large earthquakes rocked countries on opposite sides of the “טבעת האש”.
A 7.1 earthquake shook Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific. The earthquake did not cause any major structural damage or injuries because of it’s location however it was felt for hundreds of miles. Due to the depth of the earthquake there was no tsunami warning issued for this quake.
On the opposite side of the Pacific tectonic plate lies Chile who suffered a 6.5 earthquake on the same day. The quake did not cause significant damage although it had people fleeing their homes. Chilean officials evacuated roughly 485 miles of coastline because of the remote risk of a tsunami.
Electricity and phone service was out for a large part of the capital city of Santiago.
Both locations were on the increasingly active “טבעת האש” that runs from off the eastern coast of Australia, around the Pacific Ocean including the west coast of the United States and through the western coast of South America. כמעט 90% of the world’s earthquakes and 80% of the world’s largest earthquakes happen along the “טבעת האש”.
