Flash flooding in the Buenos Aires province of Argentina has left at least 35 dead between the capital of Buenos Aires and La Plata.

In La Plata, just over a foot of rain fell in a few hours leading to flooding of fourteen neighborhoods in the capital.

“[The city] has never seen anything equal,” provincial governor Daniel Scioli told reporters. According to Scioli, most of the dead in La Plata were people electrocuted or drowned after trying to take shelter in their cars.

At least 280,000 people remain without power. The city’s oil refinery was swamped and had to close due to fire. 2,500 people have been evacuated from their homes in La Plata. Over 350,000 people have been impacted in Buenos Aires.

Officlals in Buenos Aires say the rainfall in April was the heaviest in 100 years.
