Seek! (Pt. 3)

Sharon Couchman

Last week I mentioned this would be the conclusion of “Seek” but now I’ve decided there really is no end to this subject!  This research started out as one installment but expanded to three!  That’s what is so great about our God.  As we grow closer to Him, the more there is to know about Him.

Psalm 63:1 – “O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You;”

Go to God first!

Years ago the Lord gave me a personal understanding and application of this scripture.  God desires for people to seek Him early in their life, early in their situations, early before making decisions, early in relationships, early in the morning, etc.

In other words – put God first in everything – seek Him and His will in every area of your life.  I truly believe there would be fewer tragedies, disappointments and failures if we would incorporate this principle into our life.  A lot of wrong decisions and bad choices can be avoided if we seek God’s wisdom.

Hebrews 11:6 – “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Wow!  God wants an intimate relationship with us. God is a giving God and it is in His nature to reciprocate with blessings when we seek Him.

God promises to reward those who diligently seek Him!

In checking for the meaning of “diligently” the dictionary defines it in this manner:

“diligently — 1. constant in effort to accomplish something; attentive and persistent in doing anything: 2. done or pursued with persevering attention; painstaking: characterized by steady, earnest, and energetic effort”  (Webster’s & dictionary.com)

Joyce Meyer recently said, “When we seek God’s face, then His hands are always open.” God blesses those who seek Him.

1 Chronicles 16:11-12 – “Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore! Remember His marvelous works which He has done,…”

Psalm 105:4 – “Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face evermore.”

John 3:16 defines God’s nature toward all humanity.  God so loved that He had to give His best – Jesus!

When seeking to excel in spiritual matters, the following scripture instructs us to check our motives.  It is primarily to benefit “others.”

1 Corinthians 14:12 – “Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.”

It’s okay to want to grow and excel in spiritual gifts.  However, in all our excelling and accomplishments, let’s not forget that staying close to God will have an overflow effect on others.  Our heart changes as we seek God’s heart.  We become more patient, loving and our concern for the welfare of others increases.  Our goal in excelling should be motivated by the desire to help our Christian brothers and sisters, not just for ourselves.

Keep in mind that while there are many personal benefits in seeking the Lord, I think the better we know the Lord the more like Him we become.  The Bible says as He is so are we in the world. We are called to be like Christ.

1 John 4:17 — …”because as He is, so are we in this world.”  KJV

Our greatest and best example of someone seeking God was Jesus Himself.  Now if Jesus needed to take time to seek God the Father, then we should too!

As you seek the Lord and study His Word, take time to LISTEN!  Practice the art and discipline of listening!  God is not mute.  The Lord is still speaking to His people.  He says His sheep hear His voice.  In order to hear, we have to quiet ourselves and listen.  Tune in to the Shepherd’s voice.

God is always on time to get a message to His people if we are listening.

Have you ever noticed when hearing Christian radio programs or watching various TV ministers they sometimes share the same theme?  Is this coincidental?  No, it is because they have been seeking God and are hearing a similar message from the Lord!

Jesus promises when we do the following our needs will be supplied:

Matthew 6:33 – “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  KJV

God is inviting you to join in the adventure of seeking Him.  As you accept the invitation and pursue Him, you will never be the same.

SEEK AND YOU WILL FIND!
