Atheists are trying to remove a memorial to fallen Marines because they feature crosses.
Grieving Marines in 2003 erected two 13-foot crosses on a remote hill at California’s Camp Pendleton to pay honor to Marines who lost their lives in the war on terror. The crosses are at the end of a 3,000 foot hike that climbs to the top of a ridge line overlooking the ocean.
“It’s not a religious spot at all,” Karen Mendoza told Fox News. “It’s a place for the Marines to grieve and let go of their burdens.”
Mendoza’s husband Ray, one of the original seven Marines to erect the crosses, was later killed in action.
“It’s a symbol of sacrifice regardless of what you think, rezar, like or don’t like,” Mendoza said.
The Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers is threatening a lawsuit unless the Marine Corps removes the tribute to Marines who lost their lives serving our nation.
Jason Torpy, MAAF association president, was critical of the Marines who erected the crosses.
“These Marines were abusing their access to the installation,” he told FoxNews.
The commandant of the Marines is expected to release his decision on the crosses in a few days.
