<blockquote>“Hardly a day goes by when our senses are not bludgeoned by some new outbreak of terrorism in the Middle East. Despite our best efforts at making and keeping the peace, político, econômico, and religious tensions often lead to unrest, violência, and riots.”

The recent attacks along the southern border of Israel was part of a failed “large-scale terror attempt,” coordinated by Jihadiya Salafiya, the military branch associated with Al-Nour, along with jihadist elements in the Sinai. Israeli officials reported that rockets were fired from Egypt into populated areas of the Israeli Negev. Israeli security believes the attacks were launched at the request of senior leaders from the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
Deploying tanks into the demilitarized zone between Egypt and Israel would indicate that Israel probably has specific information of further terrorist attacks planned along its border. This latest coordinated attack killed an Israeli civilian driver during the shootout between terrorists and Israeli forces.
Lt. Col Avital Leibovich suspected Palestinian Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip might have also been involved in the Sinai desert incident. The Sinai mountain desert bordering Israel, Gaza Strip and Egypt harbors Palestinian extremists and al-Qaida inspired jihadists.
The growing threat from Sinai came to a head last August, when gunmen infiltrated Israel and ambushed eight Israelis in their cars on a desert highway. Six Egyptians were killed in Israel’s hunt for the militants and Israel speeded up the border fence construction.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israeli Army Radio, about the “worrisome deterioration of Egyptian control” over the Sinai. Barak hopes the winner of Egypt’s presidential elections will honor their international obligations. The Muslim Brotherhood has said it will respect the historic 1979 peace accord with Israel but they will seek changes. Israel’s reinforced security along its southern border has not brought peace to the Sinai. The democratic election for parliament and president in Egypt has not resolved the instability in Egypt either.
