Damascus – a Ruinous Heap

How long will God put up with continued massacres in the ancient city of Damascus and the nation of Syria? (Syria of today is part of the Assyrian nation of old, whose capital was Babylonia.) When will the world come together and say ENOUGH?

Even though the nations of the world neglect their responsibilities in bringing justice to this region, the Lord will not be slack in His judgment, according to prophecy.

“The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.” (Isaiah 17:1) This prophecy has not yet been fulfilled, but it will come to pass because this is the word of the Lord. Could the prophecy here be the ultimate judgment for the sins of the Assyrian nation?  Could it be that God is not willing to let the blood of the innocent cry out unanswered?

Reports are coming in saying that Syrian government troops are renewing their attacks on rebel strongholds and indiscriminately bombings of civilian neighborhoods. Fears are mounting of new massacres to come as Bashar al Assad’s regime is carrying out new atrocities. The Syrian military is shelling in the city of Homs, using mortars, helicopters and tanks against their own people in towns near the coast. Families are fleeing Homs and Rastan to escape the coming wrath and slaughter of innocents.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the tactics showed the Assad regime has been cracking down on the most severe threat to his family’s four-decade dictatorship rule and was becoming “increasingly desperate.” She asked, “What government voluntarily uses helicopters and fires from them on their own civilians if they’re not desperate? What government depends on a bunch of thugs in trucks – irregulars – if they’re not desperate?”

Mr. Annan, the U.N. Arab League envoy announced he was “gravely concerned by the latest reports of violence coming out of Syria and the escalation of fighting by both government and opposition forces.” Mr. Annan also added, “There are indications that a large number of civilians are trapped in these towns.”

Districts being attacked are an “absolute hell. The rest of it is tense, difficult and half-empty because people have fled. It’s clearly a terrible situation for the people living here; especially those who are on the receiving end of these mortar rounds.”

The ancient Assyrians were known for their ability in warfare as much as for brutality and inhumane violence. They believed their mission was to wipe out nationalism and impose their religion on the people under their domination, and make them worship their gods.

“Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his WHOLE WORK upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria , and the glory of his high looks.” (Isa 10:12)

There’s never been a complete destruction of Damascus before so that prophecy is yet to be fulfilled.

“That I will break the Assyrian in MY land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.” (Isa 14:25)

The Assyrians have always been a sworn enemy of Israel. At some point, the Assyrians will invade Israel, and Jerusalem in particular (…upon MY mountains.)  The original ancient Syrian nation, encompassed Iraq and Iran and all of the nations surrounding Israel today, including Lebanon. Today, all these nations are allies and they are all against Israel.

Many believe that the Assyrian a reference to the antichrist.  The spirit of antichrist is already working there with all of the atrocities you see in the daily news.

However, whether he is Assyrian or not is of secondary importance. We are looking for the Christ, not the anti-Christ. Don’t be distracted or deceived. This is the time to prepare to meet our King Jesus, Jeshua, the Christ.

“For I am God, and there is no other. For I am God, and there is none like me . . .
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times, things that are not yet done.”  (Isaiah 46:9-10)
