The government of Panama has ordered the closing of all schools in an attempt to help the country in the midst of a major power crisis connected to a national drought.
Nearly 60% of Panama’s power is generated through hydroelectric plants . The drought is causing significant problems for the plants as demand is far outpacing their ability to produce. The government has declared a drought emergency for over 1/3 of the country.
In addition to schools being closed, all government offices will be forced to cut their hours of operation. All bars, nightclubs, movie theaters and supermarkets in the country will have to close between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
All businesses have been asked to turn off air conditioning between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily.
President Ricardo Martinelli asked all residents to do all they could to conserve electricity.
Officials said the closing of schools would be reconsidered next week depending on the weather conditions. However, no rain is in the forecast.
The only entity in the country not impacted by the order is the Panama Canal, which generates it’s own power.
