Uruguay Congress Approves Abortion By One Vote

Matthew 19:18 ESV “And Jesus said, “You shall not murder…”

“We have so devalued human life in our society that for many people it is a small thing to kill another person.”

Uruguay’s lower house of Congress has given approval to a bill that would allow abortion in the first three months of pregnancy. The Uruguayan Senate approved a similar measure last December and will soon vote on the new bill. President Jose Mujica said he will approve the law if passed.

The bill would make Uruguay the most liberal country in South America for abortion.

Under Uruguay’s current laws, a woman who has an abortion and those who help with the killing of the baby face prison. Abortion is only allowed when a woman is raped or the life of the woman is danger. The new legislation would allow abortion when requested by a woman who meets with a doctor & waiting five days for the procedure.

A similar law was passed by the congress in 2008 but was vetoed by former President Tabare Vasquez.
